Emerson was founded in 1890 when two brothers from Scotland, Charles and Alexander Meston, recognized a major business opportunity in producing dependable electric motors. With financial support from former Union Army officer, judge, and lawyer John Wesley Emerson, they established the company in St. Louis. The business initially focused on building electric motors, and by 1892, it had expanded into manufacturing electric fans as well.

Emerson ceiling fans quickly grew to account for half of the company’s revenue, with successive fan blade designs becoming increasingly popular. By 1903, the company had also developed a ½-horsepower electric motor that gained widespread use in washing machines and sewing machines.

Emerson Aventics

Surviving the great depression of the early 20th Century the company made advances in mass production and released a range of innovative new motors and fans. By 1938 Emerson had added the design and manufacture of Arc welders to its product portfolio. With the outbreak of WWII Emerson shifted its production to the manufacture of shell casings and aeroplane gun turrets in support of the war effort.

During the following decades that followed Emerson expanded its portfolio acquiring an assortment of companies, vastly diversifying its product offering and manufacturing abilities. By 2000, the company had seen 43 years of consecutive growth and had expanded into providing reliable back-up power solutions for the telecommunication industry and building infrastructures to support internet protocol-based communications.

Emerson continued to grow through further acquisitions, including notable brands such as Avansys, Marconi’s outside plant and power business, Motorola’s embedded communications division, and many others, including Aventics in 2018. This acquisition led to the formation of the Emerson Aventics brand, a global leader in smart pneumatic technology and air processing solutions. The successful integration significantly broadened Emerson’s capabilities, creating one of the most comprehensive portfolios of advanced fluid control and pneumatic devices in the market.

Emerson Aventics portfolio includes:

Pneumatic Cylinders
